Go Back Grand CanyonI decided to preemptively start a Grand Canyon page. I took a road trip with some friends to the Grand Canyon in October of 2003. We planned on spending three nights there, with one day of heavy hiking and one day of light hiking. The first day worked out nice. We decided to hike down and up the the Grandview Trail. That trail is a little off the beaten path, a little rougher than the other trails, and unmaintained. Simply put: It was awesome. The roundtrip from Grandview Point to Horseshoe Mesa and back is about 6-7 miles. The elevation difference is about 2,500 feet. The total hike took us about seven hours. Seven miles in seven hours really doesn't seem like a lot. But we took about a 45-60 minute break at Horseshoe Mesa and a few smaller 15-minute breaks along the way, usually at saddles (land bridges between ridges). And the hike back up the Grandview Trail is bad. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but it gets a little tiring. If you check out the trail profile below, you'll see how steep it is towards the top. My long term goal is to do repeated, and inexpensive trips to the Grand Canyon. Then I hope to go with a few others, along with more equipment so we can camp below the rim a couple of nights. That is a bit more involved, but exciting... Check out the pictures and other info below...
