"I didn't save you because I wanted to. I only saved you because I might need your help."
At 4' 10", not including his hair, Hiei is possibly the shortest, most misunderstood, and most mysterious member of the Urameshi team. Very little is known about his past and his personality, but there is a small amount of confirmed information that has been gathered about him. The rest is simply speculation. Kurama knows the most about him of anyone in the team (because they were, quite literally, "partners-in-crime" before Yusuke defeated them), but sometimes even Kurama doesn't understand Hiei's actions. Therefore, Hiei, for the most part, remains shrouded in mystery. And I think that's just the way he likes it. ;)
Almost nothing is known about Hiei's parents, upbringing, childhood, and, well, past in general. However, there is one thing that is known for sure; Hiei has a half-sister named Yukina. They were born of the same mother, apparently. Yukina has no idea that Hiei is her brother, though. But, that's what Hiei wants, and those who are smart don't stand between Hiei and what he wants. (^^; He can be scary.) There is some speculation that Hiei is almost ashamed of himeself and the criminal lifestyle he has chosen for himself, so he doesn't want Yukina to know that she has a half-brother who's a criminal. In fact, Hiei even said on the subject once:
Hiei: "How long have you been standing there, Kurama? Long enough, I suppose."
Kurama: "Why don't you just tell her the truth? She deserves to know that she has a brother."
Hiei: "*smiling as he looks down at Yukina through a window* She deserves to be happy."
Yukina is the only person in the whole world that Hiei really loves and cares about. He would do anything to protect her. In fact, Yukina was the entire reason that Hiei got the Jagon Eye put into his forehead (we'll get to that later). That way, he could watch over her, even when they were living far apart. Hopefully, someday, we will be able to learn more about Hiei's past. But, for now, he remains a mystery.
Hiei is a high B class (that's really good) Fire Demon, and he has a third eye on his forehead called a Jagon Eye. Not only does it make him more powerful and give him a huge arsenal of explosive techniques, but he uses it to watch over his half-sister, Yukina. One of the techniques that Hiei is able to use because of the Jagon Eye is actually his most powerful one- the Dragon of the Darkness Flame (See the "Cool Techniques" section for more about it- once that section is up. ^^;). (Highlight to see a spoiler if you haven't seen the last round of the Dark Tournament: Hiei actually mastered the Dragon of the Darkness Flame in the last round of the Dark Tournament by abosorbing the Dragon into his being. It was AWESOME!!) ^^ It's the coolest technique ever, and I'm going to try to get a picture of it! The process he went through to get the Jagon Eye put in was extremely painful, but he was willing to endure the great pain so that he would be able to protect Yukina. The Jagon Eye almost seems to have a mind of its own, because when it is insulted, Hiei can hardly control its power. Hiei is a brilliant and ruthless fighter. He has enormous strength, but his greatest asset is his incredible speed. He is the fastest member of the whole team. Hiei is also a very skilled swordsman, and he's a telepath (which can come in very handy when keeping Botan from blabbing that Yukina is his sister). However, even with all that, Hiei was still defeated by Yusuke.
Hiei's less positive points include being very arrogant and often not the nicest of people. He's very reserved and indifferent toward others, but that's only what we see as the tough exterior. Inside, Hiei has a fierce loyalty to those who have earned his respect (like Yusuke) and always seems to barge in right at the last minute when he's really needed to save everyone. He's always making threats and saying that he'd never save a single member of the team if they were in trouble, and yet... he always seems to do just that. This tells us that Hiei has a good heart buried somewhere underneath all that junk. Hiei also lives by a very strict, very confusing honor code. Not even Kurama fully understands it. Hiei has, believe it or not, been known to show compassion at times. He's quite intelligent, but tends to kind of do his own thing. He's very independent and hates to be told what to do. He almost seems to enjoy testing boundaries (highlight this next part for a spoiler if you haven't seen after the Dark Tournament: once he got his own soul removed for trying to test a boundary) Hiei is very close to Kurama, since they were partners-in-crime for so long, and Kurama is likely the only other person besides Yukina that Hiei actually cares about. But, Hiei is also growing closer to Yusuke slowly but surely, and is growing closer to Kuwabara even more slowly. (^^; Hiei and Kuwabara don't get along very well.) Hiei is really very loyal to the team, but, well, you know that saying about reputations to keep up. ^^; Perhaps as Hiei opens up to the team more, we will learn more about him. Also, as a side note, it's not clear how Hiei feels about the fact that Kuwabara is in love with Yukina, or even if he has really noticed yet. All I can say is that when Kuwabara does find out that Yukina and Hiei are half-siblings, it's going to lead to a LOT of arguements between Kuwabara and Hiei. And it's going to be really, REALLY funny. =D
After it's all said and done, Hiei really is a great guy if you take the time to gain his respect and get to know him. And, as he would threaten, "You talk... you die." XD (Ha ha, that's Hiei for you.)
Here's some pictures of Hiei:
