From information on his naturalization papers, Timothy Donovan entered the United States through Boston, Massachusetts in May, 1848 from Ireland. The first document I have placing him in a specific location is a baptism record for his son John in 1852 in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. The 1855 Wisconsin State Census places the family in Cresco, now Ripon. The 1860 and 1870 Federal Census place the family in Taycheda. The family settled in Maywood, Minnesota in 1872. This information was found in the homestead papers Timothy filled in 1877. The 1889 City Directory for St. Paul, Minnesota shows Timothy, John, Mary and Anne living at 69 Sycamore St. John Donovan was a friend of Buffalo Bill Cody. I have a letter written by Cody while he was on tour in Great Britain in 1903 to John. In the family photographs, there are several photos of Cody and John. Mary Donovan Smith was one of the first woman lawyers in Minnesota. Anne Donovan was a schoolteacher. Ellen Donovan married Louis Duhamel on October 8, 1888 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was a farmer's wife and my great- grandmother. She lived to be over 100 years old. |
