Brandenberg Gate

Based on information gather from census records, both of my great-grandparents came to the United States in 1867. August Zauft was born in March of 1847 in Posen, Prussia. His wife Paulina was born in Bromberg, Prussia in April of 1854. Both of these cities are now in Poland. It appears they were married in 1873. They had four children of which three lived. My grandmother Alvina was born in Tomah, Wisconsin in November of 1875. Her brother Alfred was born in September of 1882. The other brother Arnold was born in September of 1888. At present I do not have data on the fourth child.

My grandmother married Joseph Peter Kahut on May 17, 1893 in a civil ceremony in River Falls, Wisconsin. Joseph was a blacksmith and died in 1925. They had five children of which my mother was the youngest. The family lived in Spring Valley and River Falls, Wisconsin. Both of my grandparents are buried in the St. Martin Catholic Church cemetery in Ashford, Wisconsin. Their grave is in the back row and has a large stone cross as a marker. There are other Kahuts related to my grandfather buried in this cemetery.
