Chuck's Trip to India

Since the internet connection in my room was down this morning (they changed the IP address of the proxy server with telling anyone), I got some free time to walk around the pool and take some pictures. Later in the day, I took some pictures as I toured the Civil Engineering and Architecture Departments at the MIT.

Here's the back of the Valley View Hotel. My room is about in the middle on the 4th floor. I'm standing on the deck that overlooks the pool. This deck can be seen in a previous picture.

Behind the pool, I discovered a path along a wooded hillside.

The path was lined with tropical plants including bamboo.

Nearly as pretty as the path in the woods, was this courtyard in one of the MIT buildings.

The MIT buildings consist mainly of verandah's linking the classroom, labs and faculty offices. This picture gives some idea how the buildings are designed. This design, and their masonry construction, keeps the buildings relatively comfortable in spite of the tropical heat.

I discovered that Architecture students and studios look the same everywhere.

Due to the frequent (several times daily) power interruptions, all the MIT computer labs have array's of batteries forming back up power supplies.

For years in my biomaterials classes, I've been telling students about the Rockwell hardness scale. Now, thanks to the Civil Engineering department at MIT, I have a picture of a Rockwell hardness testing machine.
