2008 Portland Snow

2008 was an exceptional year for winter weather in Portland, Oregon, with a number of relatively heavy snows falling on the area. Most of the photos of this page were taken at my apartment in Milwaukie, Oregon, just south of Portland.

January 28, 2008

These pictures from January 28, 2008 show a typical snowfall in the Portland area.

December 14, 2008

On December 14, Portland awoke to its first serious snowfall of the year.

These photos were taken along the Springwater Trail between Oaks Park and East Portland

For more pictures of the snow on December 14, see ORHF Holiday Express 2008.

It kept snowing through the day, and by the afternoon over 3" had accumulated on my deck railing.

December 20, 2008

The snow on the 14th melted, but on the 20th more snow arrived. By that night over 4" has accumulated on my deck railing.

December 21, 2008

The next day the snow continued to fall, briefly interrupted by freezing rain in the late afternoon. Over 8" of snow had accumulated on my deck. Notice the layer of ice formed by the freezing rain.

December 22, 2008

The snow continued to accumulate overnight and the next day the city was quite buried.

Over a foot of snow had accumulated on my deck at this point, and the railing was at capacity with almost 9 inches.

There were also some large icicles formed on the gutters and on the deck railing directly under the gutters.

These photos were taken from my kitchen window and show a slightly different perspective. Notice that snow has even accumulated on the top edge of the satellite dish.

The kids at the apartment complex stood up large pieces of the layer of ice formed by the freezing rain into a Stonehenge-like formation.

December 24, 2008

By the 24th there hadn't been much more snow, and the accumulation was just starting to melt. To the left is the odd accumulation on the half-covered front steps. The pictures below show a closer looks at the ice layer left by the freezing rain, plus the snow on the bushes.

The snow accumulated on the roof of this SUV in a used car lot on McLoughlin Blvd. clearly shows the layer of ice left by the freezing rain.

December 27, 2008

By December 27th, the slow thaw was well underway and the roads were mostly clear. The giant pile of snow that had engulfed my car had mostly melted. What was left was being held together by the layer of ice left by freezing rain nearly a week earlier. The slight slope of the parking lot caused the remaining sheet of snow to slide toward the front passenger side corner, leaving the driver's side free of snow and giving the car a "two-faced" look. The layer of ice hung over the side of the car by several inches, leaving a large ledge at the hood. There was also a slight ledge over the passenger side doors.

Thanks to the layer of ice from the freezing rain, as the snow melted from this bush, it almost looked like it had been manicured.

January 25, 2009

Late January of 2009 brought more snow, although not nearly as much as in the month before.

These pictures show views of Oatfield Road with snow in the trees.

The snow that was originally on top of this mailbox on McLoughlin Blvd. has slid down one side and is barely hanging on.

Here is Milwaukie's historic 1890 Queen Anne style Broetje House in the snow.

As the snow melted from this car, it slid down the hood and folded up on the front bumper like a blanket of snow.

Notice how far the snow has slid down the hood of my car compared to the pictures above, which were taken only 30 minutes earlier. (The snow on the windshield later froze, and when I prepared to drive to the store, it broke my scraper.)

January 27, 2009

January 27th brought another dusting of snow that melted even faster than the previous batch had.
